welcome

Steels Creek Estate was established in 1981. The vineyard is situated in the picturesque Steels Creek Valley (part of the Yarra Valley wine region) with sweeping views towards Mount Slide and the Kinglake National Park. The Steels Creek Valley was hit hard by the bushfires of February 7. After a long night fighting the fire we managed to save ourselves, home, winery/cellar door and machinery shed. The 2009 vintage, some vines and trellising and most of the fencing were lost to the fire. You can read more on the fire in our Bushfire update Newsletter or veiw photos from after the fire. There is an abundance of wildlife‚ contributing to the overall charm of the location. Visitors to the winery are warmly welcomed and can view the operations from the tasting area. Our philosophy of holding back our red vintages, so they express their bottle age characteristics continues. The difference is quite discernible since bottling. Well worth the wait!

our wines

We have recently released our new white wines. The 2008 Colombard, which is our unique varietal for the cool climate of the Yarra Valley, continues the tradition of a zesty and refreshing wine. This is always a popular wine at cellar door. In addition, we have just released our 2005 Yarra Valley Chardonnay. This wine received very good reviews by James Halliday in his 2008 Wine Companion receiving 93 points.
This wine is a great example of the new style Chardonnays that are gaining greater acceptance for less oak and minimum secondary fermentation resulting in more vibrant and refreshing wines. This style is being acknowledged and praised by wine writers and reviewers throughout the world.
We are still featuring two Cabernet Sauvignon wines at cellar door. Whilst these wines were both sourced from our vineyard they reflect the impact that seasonal variations have on the end wine style. The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is a lighter more casual style cabernet due to a higher rainfall in 2001 and less intense fruit as a result. The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon was from a dryer year and the fruit is significantly more intense giving a more robust wine to be enjoyed with more formal dining. We encourage you to experience this comparison when you next visit cellar door.
Our regular customers agree that the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon is drinking exceptionally well and is great value at only $20 per bottle.
